In Defense of Market Laws: Paraná Liberals in Action

Author:

Ederson Prestes Santos Lima

Abstract:

This article discusses the context of the emergence of Liberal Institutes in Brazil during the 1980s, as a phenomenon linked to the shift in communication channels between Brazilian business leaders and political elites, and how these institutes became the main entities for disseminating liberal economic principles. Following this initial discussion, an analysis is conducted of the founding members of the Liberal Institute of Paraná, as well as the strategies used by Paraná’s business community to spread its ideas. In the conclusion, we discuss the close relationship between liberal discourse – which aims to appear apolitical – and electoral campaigns, and the growth of parties considered left-wing.
