UNLIKELY JOURNEY: THE STORY OF RENOVABR, THE SCHOOL THAT WANTS TO CHANGE POLITICS IN BRAZIL

How to make Brazil a less unequal, richer, and more self-confident country? According to the author, entrepreneur Eduardo Mufarej, the answer lies in politics. Mufarej, who was the CEO of the asset management firm Tarpon and the president of Somos Educação, argues that we will only find our path as a nation when we have well-prepared, well-educated politicians who are proud to present themselves as politicians. Determined to make his contribution, Mufarej stepped away from his executive roles in 2017 and embarked on a “civic sabbatical” to establish RenovaBR, or simply Renova, a plural and non-partisan school for political training. Founded in October of that year, Renova had 133 students in its first class; most ran in the 2018 state elections, and 17 were elected, including federal deputies Tabata Amaral and Felipe Rigoni, and Senator Alessandro Vieira.

Unlikely Journey is a collective memory record of the construction of RenovaBR, aiming to inspire and open doors for new initiatives of the same kind. This bold endeavor is narrated in the book, from the first PowerPoint presentation about what the project would be, to the spectacular graduation of the first class at the Praça dos Três Poderes in Brasília; from the early allies and critics to the decision to focus efforts on city halls. Alongside a detailed and honest account of Renova’s creation, the author weaves in his own story, recounting the saga of his family that came from Lebanon and the connections of his mother and grandmother with the field of education. He also describes the professional challenges that ultimately shaped the entrepreneur who, one day, believed it was possible to change the face of Brazilian politics by bringing future candidates into the classroom.
