Politics in neoliberalism: Latin American experiences

Author:

Carlos Eduardo Ruiz Encina

Abstract:

This book explores the cultural dimension of neoliberal capitalist transformation, examining the changing status of politics in society. To this end, it traces its development, distinguishing its constitution as a doctrine from its materialization as a specific political process; revealing, in turn, how this process radically altered the relationship between politics and society. This trajectory imposes a new mercantilist conception of human beings, shifting the horizon of rational self-determination to society and relegating deliberation, the public sphere, and democracy—ultimately, politics—as the social experience where human freedom is realized to forge its future as a species, as a society.
