Uma expedição do Serviço Geológico do Brasil com a cooperação da Agência Japonesa de Ciência e Tecnologia da Terra e do Mar deixou pesquisadores mais perto de concluírem que a Elevação do Alto Rio Grande, a região mais rasa localizada a cerca de 1,5 mil quilômetros da costa do Sudeste, uma parte da Plataforma Continental Brasileira, que se desprendeu e afundou com o movimento das placas tectônicas.
